A duplex is a multifamily home that has two distinct dwelling areas. A structure with three residences is sometimes called a triplex, and four connected domiciles may be referred to as a quadruplex. If a single structure contains more units, it is typically termed an apartment building or a condominium. A duplex may also be described as a two-family dwelling or two-flat in some regions. In densely populated cities, the term “duplex” is also used to describe a maisonette. A maisonette is a two-story residence elevated above street level. This type of duplex is a single-family dwelling spread out across two floors connected by an indoor staircase. A maisonette may be part of a larger multifamily structure but is not a multifamily dwelling.
