The growing society’s concern on environmental sustainability is no surprise. States, organizations, and institutions are creating more awareness on green building as certain natural resources necessary for survival risk being depleted. Green building revolutionizes construction all around the world!

Tech 24 Construction is at the forefront of green building in Washington, D.C., and Virginia to conserve the environment, improve quality of life, and foster economic growth.

The Definition of Green Building

Our company defines green building as the planning, designing, constructing, and maintaining of a building that positively impacts our natural and climate environment. Green building improves the quality of life by promoting the efficient use of resources such as water and energy.

Our green building system protects ecosystems, improves the environment, uses non-toxic materials, uses renewable energy, and considers your (occupants’) quality of life.

Green Building History in the United States (U.S.)

Green building in the United States dates back to the Anasazi society, which innovatively built houses to receive solar heat during winters. The most recent movement was spurred by the 1970’s oil crisis, which coerced constructors to embrace eco-friendly building alternatives. These embraced eco-friendly building alternatives had minimal impact on environmental sustainability.

Some remarkable moments after green building commenced in the United States include:

  • 1989 – Formation of the environment committee by the American Institute of Architects (AIA)
  • 1992 – Publication of the environmental resource guide, commencement of the ENERGY STAR program, and introduction of the first local green building program
  • 1993 – Establishment of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and launch of the “Greening of the White House” initiative
  • 1998 – Launch of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

Some of the green building initiatives put in place by the U.S. government include:

  • 2005 – The enactment of the Energy Policy Act
  • 2006 – Signing of “The Federal Leadership in High Performance and Sustainable Buildings Memorandum of Understanding” and “The Environmental Scorecard for federal agencies.” “The Federal Green Construction Guide for Specifiers” was also launched in the same year.
  • 2007 – The Executive Order 13423 to strengthen the Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transport Management was signed by President Bush. The high-performance green federal buildings were included in the Energy Independence and Security Act.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is Green Building

Green building has become a mainstay concept in our constructions as most clients opt for sustainable, energy-saving and cost-saving alternatives.

The LEED certification is a globally acclaimed symbol used for ranking green buildings. Our LEED provides a central system that rates a building’s sustainability based on its construction design.

LEED advocates for improved individual human health, decreased contribution to global climate change, and better sustainable and regenerative material cycles.

Benefits of Green Buildings

  1. Profitable and cost-effective. Green buildings reduce day-to-day costs to increase savings. More so, such buildings have higher resale values compared to regular ones. More than that, green buildings have low operating costs.
  2. Acts as an environmental solution. Green buildings reduce carbon, energy, and water waste to improve environmental sustainability. The green building system reduces air pollution. Such facilities no longer require significant energy for cooling and heating.
