A Look Inside DCity Smokehouse’s New Home

DCity Smokehouse, the carnivorous company with a cult-like following, makes a comeback on Wednesday in a much larger space.

Located at 203 Florida Ave. NW, the new restaurant boasts a full bar and seating for 35 inside. And when spring hits, expect another 45 seats outside.

The 1,500-square-foot space is going for an earthy-meets-masculine vibe, with brick walls, stainless steel, two garage doors allowing for outside views, mural art from D.C.’s Sofale, and a widescreen TV projector. The bar is accented with wooden logs, modern light fixtures, and black backsplash tiling. Odes to D.C.’s flag and pig, chicken, and cow parts are spotted throughout.

DCity Smokehouse’s original locale, which debuted nearby in 2013 with a handful of counter seats, shuttered about a year ago–but not before being arguably crowned the city’s best barbecue destination.

The same generous sandwiches that put DCity Smokehouse on the map are back, like DCity Halfsmoke and Meaty Palmer (turkey, pork belly, avocado, tomato, chipotle aioli). There’s now platters with more sides, in-house baking, and new staples like Mac and Jack Cheese.

Co-owners Scott Jacobs, Melvin Hines, and the Southeast Restaurant Group (Wicked Bloom) are behind the brand. Jacobs has an architectural background and took the lead on the DCity’s design.

The D.C. area will continue to up its smoked meats game this month: Myron Mixon, a celebrity on the barbecue pitmaster circuit, is opening a restaurant in Alexandria on Jan. 11.
